Beymen Mandarin Oriental
Toner has used local stones on the façade of the Beymen store at Mandarin Oriental to recreate the textures unique to Bodrum. The same principle also determined the design of the interior façade where raw wooden separations and light linen curtains were used to evoke local tactual qualities. While the application of linen screens corresponded with the overall transparency of the façade and thus stimulated a feel particular to Bodrum, the contrasting exposed concrete surface — adorned with magnolia patterns by a contemporary artist— helped reinforce local tactual sensations. Lighting fixtures were hidden in display units to reflect on the transition from day to light in terms of spatial illumination.
